  • 2 cups elbow macaroni or any pasta shape you prefer
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese you can use a mix of sharp and mild cheddar
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika optional, for added flavor
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder optional
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs for topping, optional

  • Turn on the oven to 350 °F (175 °C).
  • As directed on the packaging, cook the pasta until it is al dente (cooked but still firm). Drain, then set apart.
  • Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. In order to make a roux, which will thicken the sauce, add the flour once the butter has melted. Whisk continuously for around 1-2 minutes.
  • Pour the milk in gradually and keep whisking. It should take three to five minutes to thicken the mixture while cooking and whisking.
  • Shredded cheddar cheese is added after lowering the heat. Until the sauce is smooth and the cheese is completely melted, stir. If using, combine the paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • When the pasta is thoroughly coated, add the cooked spaghetti to the cheese sauce and toss.
  • Transfer the mixture to a baking dish that has been oiled if you wish to bake your mac and cheese. For a crisp crust, you might optionally sprinkle breadcrumbs on top. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and the top is golden brown, in the preheated oven.
  • Serve the mac and cheese straight from the saucepan if you want it made on the stove.
  • As the mac and cheese will be very hot, give it some time to cool before serving. Enjoy!
  • You may add extra flavour and diversity to your mac and cheese by adding ingredients like fried bacon, sautéed onions, or diced tomatoes.
